Gaining health care Experience at Summa Health
Shelby, a dedicated student pursuing a major in Exercise Science with a minor in Psychology, has secured an internship shadowing a registered nurse in the T2 ICU at Summa Health. Although she's just getting started in her health care career, Shelby is already making a significant impact by providing support to her nurse and the patients under their care.
During her internship, Shelby assists her nurse in delivering blankets to patients and ensuring their comfort. She also fills up water for patients and is always ready to lend a helping hand when needed. She has been granted unique opportunities to witness critical medical procedures, such as sitting in on bedside surgeries and observing CAT scans from the X-ray technicians' point of view. Shelby's eagerness to learn and grow has also led her to observe surgeries in the Interventional Radiology department.
A Wealth of Knowledge and Skills
Shelby's experience at Summa Health aligns perfectly with her aspirations to become an ICU RN in the future. The exposure she's receiving to intensive care practices and the guidance she's receiving from skilled professionals is setting her on the path to success.
One of the goals Shelby set for herself during this internship is to become the best nurse she can be. Summa Health, being a level 1 trauma hospital, has provided her with an ideal environment to enhance her knowledge and gain experiences in intensive care practice. Through her time in the T2 ICU, she has had the opportunity to learn about a wide range of medical practices, including brain aneurysms, rapid blood infusions, ventilators, various types of IV insertion, Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy, dialysis, posturing and much more.
When we asked Shelby for her advice to future Zips seeking to maximize their summer internships or co-op experiences, she highlighted the vast opportunities available at Summa Health for aspiring professionals. She emphasized that reaching out to connections, like her teammate who interned at Summa Health last year, can be a fantastic way to discover potential internships. So don't be afraid to leverage your network!
Additionally, Shelby encourages you to approach your internship with an open mind, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. Be proactive and take every chance to immerse yourself in the work environment, ask questions and absorb as much knowledge as possible. Remember, every experience, no matter how small, has the potential to shape your future and pave the way for success.
